This module outlines the basic requirements of a cargo securement system and explains each of the elements that make up an effective securement system. It also discusssses how direct and indirect tiedowns are used in a cargo securement system, along with how to calculate working load limit and aggregate working load limit. After completion, participants will be able to:
- Explain the difference between a direct and an indirect tiedown
- Provide examples of how to correctly use a front-end structure
- Provide examples of how to secure cargo without a front-end structure
- Describe how to restrain round articles
- Explain the best angles to use with both indirect and direct tiedowns
- Describe how to position tiedowns to get better angles
- List the minimum number of tiedowns to use with blocked and unblocked articles of different lengths
- Determine the aggregate working load limit required for a load and whether there are enough securement devices to be compliant
